The system behind the habitat

WHAT IS BIOMEKKA?

BioMekka is a living paludarium wrapped in a custom weather, climate, camera and automation system. It is part ecosystem, part engineering project and part ongoing experiment.

A HABITAT THAT WATCHES AND RESPONDS

BioMekka does not just run a collection of timers. Sensors report what is happening, the controller decides what is needed, and the environment responds while the residents carry on living inside it.

Built, coded and slightly unhinged

HOW TO BUILD A STORM

BioMekka’s storm engine does not simply switch everything on at once. It builds the weather in stages: the light fades, wind and mist rise, rain begins, and thunder is mixed into the habitat audio.

Each storm varies in timing and intensity, then gradually unwinds as the rain stops, the wind drops and the normal soundscape returns. No two storms play out exactly the same.

FROM SHED SWAMP TANK TO LIVING WEATHER SYSTEM

BioMekka began with a discarded roadside fish tank that quickly became known as the “swamp tank”.

“You can experiment with it in the shed — but it isn't coming indoors.”

The shed became its first testing ground, where foggers, rain mechanisms and increasingly ambitious ideas could be tried without threatening the furniture.

By the second tank, it looked less like a damp experiment and more like something worth seeing. The ruling was quietly reconsidered, and the swamp tank was finally allowed across the threshold.

Several rebuilds later, BioMekka now occupies a permanent corner of the living room and generates its own rain, fog, wind, daylight and storms using custom hardware, sensors and software.
